Top ten tips to achieving efficiency savings in local public services

2010-07-12

Improvement and Efficiency West Midlands (IEWM) launched an exciting guide to achieving efficiency savings in local public services at last week’s LGA annual conference in Bournemouth (6-8 July).

The guide showcases ten top tips on how local authorities can access support from IEWM to secure real efficiency savings, helping them to manage their budgets and free up resources to reinvest in local services.

Andy Hancox, Director of Improvement and Efficiency West Midlands, said: “IEWM has a strong emphasis on efficiency and we have developed a significant programme of work over the last two years, supporting authorities and partnerships to work together to achieve improved efficiency and productivity.

“This guide demonstrates how we have already supported over £40m of efficiency savings since April 2008 through our work on eAuctions, collaborative procurement, asset management, transformation and the improved commissioning of children’s and adults services.”

IEWM has delivered over £15m savings from the Procurement Hub, an online resource in which local authorities can access shared contracts, and through collaborative procurement with returns now achieving c£1m per month from this programme alone.

IEWM’s electronic reverse eAuction programme has released £20m savings over the 18 months with substantially more to come.

Further savings have come from IEWM’s transformation programme and through the improved commissioning of children’s and adults services including the increased usage of telecare and assistive technology to deliver efficiencies in the social care markets.

By September 2011 IEWM is predicting efficiency savings in excess of £100m and £175m over a five year period, through for example some ground breaking work on asset management which has the potential to deliver £640m savings for the West Midlands over a ten year period.
