Building the capacity of Personal Assistants to deliver personal care
2010-05-25
As local authorities drive forward their plans to transform adult social care services, there will be a sharp rise in the take-up of personal budgets, with 30% of eligible service users expected to be in receipt of a personal budget by March 2011. This is expected to create demand for directly employed Personal Assistants as more people take greater control of their individual support plans.
Improvement and Efficiency West Midlands commissioned Impact Change Solutions Ltd to deliver a project to “support the delivery of the Putting People First agenda by
building the capacity and quality of directly employed Personal Assistants in the West Midlands
”
The project’s analysis of the role of local authorities in building capacity and of the barriers to direct employment has provided an evidence base that reflects the experiences of service users and PAs as revealed through consultation.
It has also served to inform the contents of the
West Midlands Direct Employment Toolkit.
The Toolkit begins to pull together resources to inform, develop and empower service users and Personal Assistants – helping create an environment in which direct employment can flourish.
The project’s final report and recommendations will be published in early June 2010. For further information about the West Midlands PA Project, please contact:
